Watch Lists

As of 06/28/08 *

Stock picks are generated by trading system filters.  Stock filters may fall into either the growth (momentum) category at the short end of the trading time spectrum or the value category at the longer end of the spectrum.  No endorsement or sponsorship by the master traders listed below is implied.

Currently there are 2 check lists and 6 types of watch list available based on various styles of trading.  Insider Buying and Capital Rich Companies are useful check lists before making a trade.  For the intermediate term,  Growth Momentum picks are based on a momentum stock picking method and Peter Lynch picks are based on a value stock picking method.  Martin Zweig picks are based on a growth stock picking method.  Longer term value investing methods are used to filter watch lists containing the Warren Buffett picks, John Templeton picks and the Benjamin Graham picks If you find yourself consistently favoring a particular watch list, it may indicate a predilection for a particular type of trading system.

If one uses a multiplicity of trading systems, he should keep separate logs for each.  This will enable him to evaluate them more clearly.  But more than this, it provides an opportunity to use a predictive method of profit goal setting based on a model of precision money management.  Input parameters for the model require that a historical record be kept of winning and losing trades.  The Options Results page on this site is one such record.

New filters are being added continually to address longer term value picks, as well as, short term momentum picks.  You can receive more information in the weekly newsletter with additional stock picks.  Stocks that are screened for the first time appear in the newsletter up to a month before they are posted here.   Just leave your name and address at the upper left of this page.

Current stock rankings for each filter are based on the degree to which stocks are overbought or over sold based on the 28-period Williams %R for two successive trading days.  Two columns are labeled “%R1” and “%R2” with “%R2” indicating the Williams %R for the most recent trading day.  Of course, values more negative than -80 are oversold and those less negative than -20 are overbought.

One should keep in mind that oversold stocks are not necessarily ready to move upward.  They could very well be in a condition of continuous decline.  The lists are meant to serve as a starting point for further due diligence.

A column labeled “Monthly % Gain” shows the inverse relationship between price action over the past month and the Williams %R.

Stocks are added and removed from watch lists according to closing prices at week's end on Fridays. The “Reference” is the date that a stock passed the indicated filter and was first added to or returned to the list.  The “% Change” is how the price has changed since the reference date.  The “% from Max” is the percentage the price has declined from the maximum price reached since the reference date.  Trailing stops can vary widely.  The application of trailing stops is explained in the weekly newsletter.  Stocks that are down from their highs by half the amount of their trailing stops are flagged in yellow.  Stocks that are stopped out are removed for two months.  Additional information on filters is available on each filter page.

A performance summary of filtering techniques for checklists and master trader selection methods is given below.  The “Avg. Gain in . . .” columns include losses for stocks that have been removed after a decline.  The other columns only include stocks that are currently listed.
